The term road train first came into usage in the middle of the nineteenth century in Australia when they were originally used in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. Back then, traction engines were used to haul multiple wagons over the mountain passes to get to Port Augusta. After that period, road trains found some military uses, notably in the second British war against the Boers in South Africa.
